Open Question: Is there anything wrong with being a do it yourself consumer?
I’m a 38 year old widow. After my husband died in 2003, I realized that the life insurance money wasn’t going to go very far, unless I became extremely frugal. Over the last 7 years I’ve taken many, many, many classes, and I’ve obtained quite a few certifications. From Personal Trainer (www.witseducation) to Building/Construction. I’ve literally saved thousands by being a do it yourself consumer. Some of my family members think that I’m obsessed with being frugal. But that’s not the case at all. Why pay someone else to do a job, when I can do it for a fraction of the cost?

I can give you a really good example of what I’m talking about. In 2007, I took a seminar on how to flip houses and buy houses for the back taxes. This was also the same year that I had taken courses in real estate, realtor, and housing inspection. I knew that eventually I wanted to buy a house of my own. Up until 7 months ago I was living in a very cheap, garage apartment near my job. I decided that I was ready to move into my first and only house. I bought a 1,700 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 bath house, with a two car garage, for the back taxes. The house has a swimming pool. I paid $4,312 for it all. Because of all of the classes I had taken in Building Construction, Interior Design, Cabinet Making, Furniture Making & Refinishing, Sewing. I spent $23,000 to have the home of my dreams. I got a huge tax refund, and I am using that toward an international adoption.

When I had my house warming party everyone from my job, asked me who had decorated my home. I proudly told them that I had did it myself. I also told everyone that I had made all of the food as well. Everyone was shocked, because they thought I had paid a professional to do it all for me. Nope it was all my hard work. I love that I can do things for myself, and I know that it will be done right.

So I’m asking all of the people out there reading my question: Is there anything wrong with being a do it yourself consumer?

Voting Question: question about harassment?
My wife and i recently moved into a new home. The first week we met our neighbor, an elderly lady. That was really the only time we spoke. Then all of a sudden, she started reporting us for petty things that weren’t even true. She called because our grass was too tall, it wasn’t, the codes guy came out and it was under the limit. She called because we drove too fast, which we don’t. Then she called because my car is too loud, which it is loud, but passes all inspection areas and is legal. Now, she is saying that i go past her house (on a public road) and rev my engine and wants to press charges for harassment. i was going to just pay the fine and move on, but found out that there is a maximum of $300 (not a concern) and 90 days in jail (a big concern). So i plead not guilty, which I really am not, and have a trial. I am just concerned about the jail time because i have a clean record and a one year old and a family. Could i really go to jail over this if the judge should believe her false accusations?
