Open Question: Mold and rennovation: House question…?
We might buy a house built in 1955. We’re in FL. It needs to be fixed up and smells terribly like MOLD! What does it take to get rid of this? We know it needs a new roof, but it has block/concrete walls….will we need to replace these too? The kitchen’s already gutted but the bathrooms are redone and there is new tile in some of the home. Can we keep the tile and baths or should these come out? Not sure where to start or what one does (do we hire a mold inspector, do you rip out the block and replace etc. etc). Any insight is appreciated.

Resolved Question: Double-Wide Mobile Home Roof Leak?
I realize there’s probably not a lot of hope for this situation but I thought I would ask…
We have a (approx) 40 year old double wide that we’re currently living out of. Due to finances, this is all we have. When it was purchased the inspector said it was fine and pointed out minor issues. Come to find out the owner painted the ceiling and it is starting to re-stain with roof leaks. During snow melting or heavy rain, some parts of the ceiling can be damp or drip. It has a weird looking roof, it looks like a layer of rigid foam with snowseal on top and is in very poor condition. What can be done about this? I was kind of thinking a large metal-roofed carport (built big enough) to enclose the double-wide in, this would solve several issues at once. Any thoughts/concerns/suggestions?

Resolved Question: What is the better choice for rat exclusion?
I live in Atlanta. My house was just inspected and found to have a medium infestation of rats and possible flying squirrels in both the crawl space and the attic (I saw one in the gas stove!!). I was given an estimate of $2,600 for exclusion and repair to the house and $300 for the actual trapping of the rodents. The inspector showed me the holes and droppings.

I am a single woman who know very little about home repair and I don’t have the tools I’d need anyway.

The actual estimate says: seal off ground vents, dryer vent, seal off crawlspace door, various holes in wall 8, AC lines seals, roof line gap seal around entire house, fill ridge and valleys off roof line.

My question is this:
Would it be better to go with the rodent experts for the sealing of my house or could a general handyman do the work just as well for less money? My budget is very tight, but I don’t want to go cheap and regret it later.
