How to build a solar wall oven? | Inspected Thoughts
I really think that I would have to test it out before tearing into my walls, or dedicating space to a unit. I like the solar oven that I have already built. I now placed it into a table for my bench. I do use my oven quite a bit, … Your Houston Home Inspector is meant to be a site where you find out about home inspections, products for the home, residential building trends, real estate issues, green options with energy efficiency, information about mortgages, … read more…

Resolved Question: I need help from some engineers on coal dust removal inside home?
I have a friend who has an attic with coal dust in it. I am trying to find a safe way to remove it. I was told to vac it out. I was even told to leave the vac outside the house and run a 1 1/4 inch hose into the attic. Sounded good. But, After much study I found an article that said to ground the vacuum truck outside, and wet down the area before vacuuming the coal dust up. Then another article said that, “Moisture from wash down procedures can accelerate the oxidation process, and when temperature is reached, self ignition can occur.” I know that coal dust is combustible. This attic is covered with it, walls, rafters, and the men who went up to check something for the owner came down looking like they had worked in a mine.
Now it would be nice if a health inspector could come in and tell the owner how to remove it, but West Virginia is in a fight right now to preserve clean coal, and the inspectors usually just brush question off, with, ‘you have safe limits’, of course when the Methane got in the water wells they said the same thing, but said, “DON”T SMOKE AROUND IT
So we are a little dubious about the inspectors. This friend has a productive cough of yellow and green sputum, never had any lung trouble as a child or teenager, and this started two years ago when she was 63. She has had Ct Tomography with contrast which showed nothing. And they ran all the tests for allergens. Nothing shows up. So now we are down to finding out if her house is sick, and the coal dust in the attic came up. Can any one tell me how to remove it without burning the house down. Since wetting the dust down, and even grounding the vacuum is dangerous what can be done.
Thank You for all suggestions. She bought this house as a fix upper.

Voting Question: What is making me have breathing problems and feel so sick all the time?
We moved into our house about 2 years ago. Last winter we noticed some mold around the windows in our basement and on some furniture. We had a mold inspector come and inspect the house. He said that we didn’t have a mold problem and that we could easily clean it up ourselves. I began feeling short of breath, jittery, fatigued, etc. around Feb./ Mar. ‘09 and thought it was the mold. I have since gone to many doctors, had me tested for asthma (none), allergies (I am not allergic to any indoor molds or dust mites), etc. Everything comes back fairly normal. I have 3 kids under the age of 4 and am with them most of the day by myself (usually at home), I have a small business I run from home, and I have anxiety in my family history. People keep telling me it is stress and anxiety. I only seem to notice it in my house however. Is something in my house making me sick? No one else seems to be suffering and I am beginning to think I am going crazy or dying. When I am at my worse, I have a slight headache, my heart feels like it is beating fast, I breathe quickly since I am trying to catch my breath, I lose my patience with anyone extremely quickly, and it sometimes gets so bad I feel like I can’t handle any situation, the kids, etc. or my head will explode!!!! Please help.
Resolved Question: Gas Line Pressure Test - Pass/Fail Critera?
I’m doing a home remodel job that includes relocating a couple of gas outlets. Having finished installing the pipes, we did a pressure test and found a slow leak. (Not in our new work, but in an unrelated branch of pipe. It was there all along?) When we pressureize the line to 10psi, it leaks down to 3 psi in 12 hours.
My buddy tells me this is good enough. He says that if it holds pressure for 15 minutes, that’s a “pass”. I’m going to track down the leak and fix it. Any leak is too big for my comfort. But is he right? Would the building inspector buy it off as it is? Would a leak like this be too small to smell? Too small to be a health hazard?
Just curious.
The new Google Chrome rocks. Freaking fast. Noticeably faster. Now up for testing? @threadsy
