Resolved Question: Which Vehicle should we sell?
My husband and I have a 2005 TDI Diesel Jetta and a 2004 prerunner TDR off road 4 door Toyota Tacoma truck.
We need to sell on of these vehicles.
The Pros and Cons:
PROS JETTA:
Diesel and fantastic gas mileage at 40-56mpg.
$9.00 inspection fee every year, very cheap and very safe
It’s a diesel so it is supposed to last for a very long time.
CONS JETTA:
Very expensive to repair and change ANYTHING on the vehicle. Needs special batteries, oil changes, and parts. I can not go to Advanced Auto and get something to use for the car, it can ONLY be done at VW. Needs special tools to remove nuts for breaks, only VW sells brakes, only VW sells batteries, only VW has tools to open up mechanics on car.
Does not start sometimes on mornings that are cold.
Batteries cost $350.00 via VW
Very noisey
PROS of TOYOTA: Toyota’s are generally reliable
It is large enough for a family
Can buy parts at advanced auto and change oil at home and fix mechanical problems at home
CONS of Toyota: High miles at 100k, tires are expensive so replace, and toyota parts can be too.
Low gas mileage at about 15-28mpg.
What do you guys think?
Which vehicle should I sell?
Many Thanks!
Voting Question: Ignition system trouble on ‘99 Vulcan Nomad 1500 (I will not take it to a shop, period)?
I’ve been working on my ‘99 VN1500-G1 (Vulcan Nomad 1500 USA) for quite some time. Trouble started on the freeway, when I felt a lack of power in the top end revs. I limped it as close as I could to my destination, only to have the poor thing stall out (engine cuts off like you hit the kill switch) miles short. After a bit of cranking the starter it turned over and made it off the freeway, but no further.
When jumping it to a truck, I managed to get it finally to turn back over and had a ping/knock noise. Towed it home. Once there, took a look inside and found a melted connection from the outside stator (there’s two) to the IC Igniter. Cut the plastic away and soldered the pieces together. Fired it up and made it a mile down the road. It still felt like it had no power, but just as I was about to turn around it died again. It was still making that knocking noise if I listened real careful. My first thought was a short, but a second inspection of the melted connection area revealed no melted electrical tape and no sign of arcs to the frame or cover. It hasn’t felt like starting in a couple of days, but the starter solinoid clicks like there’s no battery power, replaced the battery and no change.
I know knock usually is a result of combustion somewhere in the chamber where it shouldn’t be yet, and can be remedied by either lowering the compresion ratio (previous owner upped from 9.6 to 10) or a higher octane fuel (I already use the 95 premium) or possibly caused by bad timing issues. I believe this is the cause of the carbon buildup on the plugs (already replaced, along with air filter replacement).
I refuse to pay $100 for someone else to fix this, however the service manual says if you have bad timing you just check the IC Ignitor and the Pickup Coils. However to check the ignitor I need a special tool, same with the coils.
Anyone out there know a trick to check these compoinants ussing a DMM (’bout the only “special tool” I have) and not buying new ones just to see? Anyone see somewhere I overlooked in my diagnosis. Any help that doesn’t say “I have no idea, go to the dealer / mechanic” would be greatly appreciated. I can’t afford to pay them currently
