Open Question: Is this wiring illegal? And what to do about it ASAP?
I am moving into an old home. Its been appraised but not inspected, I am having it inspected. The seller informed me that the wiring is illegal and needs to be fixed - she is selling on behalf of someone else who is unable to care for themselves and she got power of attorney, and this all came about very quickly so I don’t blame her for having to sell the house with this problem.

We accepted that we are going to have the wiring fixed when we move in.

However my mortgage broker and my lawyer are pressing for the home inspection and I am afraid of them inspecting it now because the situation isn’t fixed yet, so I have to have it fixed as soon as possible so I can get the home inspection done ASAP as well.

The situation: The breaker switch box is located inside one of the kitchen cabinets. She said it is illegal because it is through the cabinet. I honestly don’t see how this is a problem - is it a fire hazard maybe? Anyway. How should I go about fixing this as soon as possible and how much would it cost? I’m already forking over an unexpected $500 for the inspection so I hope it won’t cost an arm and a leg - but hey, them’s the breaks I guess when you’re getting an old house! Thanks for any help you might have to offer.

LOL yes guys I am getting the inspection done, that is not the point, the point is about the wiring - what to do about that!

The reason we aren’t going through a REALTOR is because it’s a family member selling us this house. So we’re just using our lawyers.

I just wanted some info as to whether the wiring problem would stop the bank from approving the mortgage, (if we were to forgo the inspection until after we moved in) and how to best go about fixing the wiring problem as soon as possible so we actually can have the inspection done before the house closes. We need the inspection done by Jan 30 which is only a week away.

Open Question: Have you gone through the process of getting your home kitchen certified?
I live in NC and I’m considering getting my apartment kitchen certified to sell baked goods. I have actually called the Dept. of Agriculture for the name of an inspector to call when I’m ready for the inspection but was forewarned (by friends) that it was very possible that I may not be able to pass through all the red tape and therefore get shut down before I really get anything going. Has anyone gone through this process, is it extremely tedious, is it doable in an apartment? I would like to sell my products at farmers markets (among other places) and was told by the Dept of Ag I would need certification in order to do so.
